So I've been further exploring the idea of essence and came across a multi-faceted definition.

es-sence, noun.
1 The intrinsic or indispensable properties that serve to characterize or identify something
2 The most important ingredient; the crucial element
3 The inherent, unchanging nature of a thing or class of things
4 An extract that has the fundamental properties of a substance in concentrated form
5 One that has or shows an abundance of a quality as if highly concentrated

I also discovered this significant phrase - FUNDAMENTAL NATURE.

If one is going to get to the essence of something, it is also important to get to the essence of essence, mind-bending as this is.

I just discovered this superb definition of essence -

'In philosophy, essence is the attribute or set of attributes that make an object or substance what it fundamentally is, and which it has by necessity, and without which it loses its identity.'

Just love this. If you're curious, read more here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essence
